Create new wiki

Enable wikis

Step 1
To create blogs you will first need to enable the tool on your module. From July 2016 wikis will be enabled on all modules by default.

Step 2
You will then see a large chart listing all the possible tools in Unilearn. Scroll down to Wikis, check the box in the column next to it and click Submit to save.

Please note: Do not select Wiki Tool as this is a completely different tool.

Set up the wikis

Step 1
Select Communication and Tools from the navigation menu.

Step 2
From the list of tools, click Wikis.

Step 3
You will then see the wikis overview page. Click the Create Wiki button.

Step 4
Give the wiki a title and, optionally, add a description or instructions to students if needed.

Step 5
Make sure that the wiki is available to students. Or, if you don’t want them to be able to see it before/after specific dates you can set these in the availability restrictions.

Step 6
Select whether you want students to be able to edit the wiki (if set to no then only staff will be able to add information to the wiki – this can be useful in certain situations) and whether you want them to be able to leave comments on wiki pages.

Step 7
Choose whether you will be grading contributions to the wiki or not.

Step 8
Click submit to complete the setup process.

Access and view wiki entries

Both you and your students can access the wikis to add entries and comments in the same way if you have set it up to allow students to edit.

Step 1
Click Communication and Tools from the navigation menu.

Step 2
From the list of tools, click Wikis.

Step 3
You’ll then see a list of all the wikis available in the module. Select the wiki to view.

Step 4
If there is no content on the wiki (ie it is new) then you will be taken to an editor to create a home page for the wiki.
If content has already been created then you will be taken to the home page.

Step 5
If there are already multiple pages in the wiki then a menu of pages will appear on the right side of the wiki.

Add and edit wiki content.

All wikis must contain at least one page – the home page. If there is no content on the wiki (ie it is new) then you will be taken to an editor to create a home page for the wiki.

There are then two ways to add content to a wiki:

  • Add a new page
  • Edit an existing page

To add a new page simply click the Create Wiki Page button at the top of the wiki.
To edit a page, navigate to the page you want to edit and click the Edit Wiki Content button.

The editor window allows you to add all types of content to a wiki page including formatted text, links, images, embedded videos, and more.

Undo edits to the wiki

If you disapprove of an edit to a wiki page or want to revert it back to its previous state then you can do this using the page history tool.

Step 1
Using the wiki navigation menu on the right hand side of the wiki click the grey circle icon next to reveal the action menu and select History.

Step 2
You will then be taken to the Page History area. Here you can see all versions of the wiki page, when they were edited and who by, and you can click the individual versions of the page to view them. To revert to a previous version simply tick the box next to the version to be removed and delete it.

You can also select multiple versions of the page using the check boxes and select the Compare Versions button to view the page with all edits highlighted.
