Portfolios are a means to collect, organise and publish pieces of work over time. They may have a general purpose or be used to showcase achievement.
At USW we have the BlackBoard Personal Portfolios tool enabled for users. This allows users to create a collection of ‘artefacts’ which can then be organised into one or more portfolio collections. A snapshot of the portfolio can then be shared with other users, or external contacts, at any time.
Portfolios are user based, not module or course specific. However, links to a user’s portfolio homepage can be added to a module and users can set up separate portfolios for different purposes, modules, assignments, etc.
You may choose to create a personal portfolio for your own staff development needs, perhaps as a record for HEA fellowship or other CPD.
You may also wish to encourage your students to use portfolios. If this is the case you can provide quick links to this tool directly from a module. See further down this page for Adding a portfolio link to a content area of a Blackboard module and Adding a portfolio link to your module menu in Blackboard.
If you would like to use this tool with your students and are interested in creating a template for your students so that they have a starting point for their portfolio then please log a call to Customer Support Services.
To find out more about using portfolios, please visit our student portfolios help page.
There you will find information on the following:
In a content area of your module (e.g. learning materials – although depending on your usage of the portfolio tool this could be in assessments) and with editing turned on: Go to Tools > More Tools > Portfolio Homepage.
In your module, with editing turned on, click the + in the top left of the main module menu and select Tool Link. Give the link a name and select Portfolios Homepage from the Type drop-down menu. Don’t forget to make the link available to users.
