Creating Tests in Blackboard

Tests and surveys are used to measure student knowledge, gauge progress, and gather information from students. You can assign points and give feedback on test questions but surveys are not scored. Survey results are anonymous, but you can see whether a student has completed a survey and view aggregate results for each survey question. Blackboard offers 17 different question styles.

Create a new test

There are two steps to making a test/survey in Blackboard. Creating the test and Deploying the test.

Create the test

Step 1

From the Navigation menu, expand the Course Tools menu and select Tests, Surveys and Pools.

Step 2
Click Tests.

Step 3
You will now see the tests area where you can manage and create all tests on a module. If you already have any tests on the module you will see them listed here. To begin creating a new test click Build Test.

Step 4
You will now see the Test Information page. Give your test a name and description.

You should also add some information to the instructions text box to help students understand how the test works and any other guidance (e.g. is it summative/formative, should they expect feedback, can they re-take it, etc).

Then click Submit to continue.

Step 5
You will now see your test 'canvas’. Each test function like a shell or box that you can populate with questions – either new ones or ones that already exist in other tests.

Step 6

When you have created all of your questions, click OK (located at the bottom-right of the page).

You will then be returned to the tests overview page. You now need to deploy the test in your module so that students can access it.

Deploying a test

Step 1
Go to the folder where you want the test to appear (e.g. Assessments, or a particular folder within Learning Materials). On the action bar click Assessments and, from the dropdown, select Test.

Step 2
On the Add Test page select the test you made from the list and then click the Submit button.

Step 3
You will now see the Test Options page. Here you can set when and how the test can be taken. You should read through each option and set it to be appropriate for the individual assessment needs (e.g. single or multiple attempts, available always or only between specific dates, graded or not, etc). The appropriate option will depend on the pedagogical requirements of this assessment.

One key option is:

  • Make the link available – Must be set to YES or students will not be able to access the test.

Once all the options have been set appropriately click Submit to continue. You will then see the test ready to be taken.
